I can remember walking down the stairs and seeing a Les Mills Grit class who ever thought it was a good idea to put endless staircases in a gym really needs to reevaluate their choices.

All those lycra-clad, Nike-shoed fitspo people doing burpees and whatever else looked terrifying. This one is for you. This is definitely our favourite of the Grit series. The warm up consists of a lot of jumping on and off your platform, whether it is running, squatting, burpees or lunges.

You then go through a few different sequences, again including your platform and a whole lot of jumping. Each class we have done has been different, but here are a few of the things we do.

This might sound terrifying, but at the end of the day there are always plenty of options. If jumping is too much for you, you can step up on to your platform.

There are always ways to make it a bit easier and to cheat, yes sometimes I do less reps and I am not sorry! After all, these classes are just 30 minutes and once you have done one or two, they seem to go by a lot faster. Take flight. After the warm up, which is a lot of high knees, ski jumps, tuck jumps, squat jumps, burpees etc you go into sequences that follow a similar pattern. You may do high knees to the side followed by a few tuck jumps for a certain amount of time, then you do a different move — say mountain climbers.

Then you are back up to start again. Most classes go over the same sequence a few times and by the end of it your tuck jumps are a little less tucked — but fatigue is good, it means you are working as hard as you should be!

We sweat this out together.

Both classes are actually a little easier than I thought they would be we are yet to try a Grit Strength, but watch this space. But, it is possible and not reserved for those super fitspo people that seem to flock to Les Mills. Staring on your platform, jump down with one leg either side and land in a squat. Run on to your platform, jump off, squat, jump down into push up jump back up — repeat. Start with legs either side of the platform in a squat, jump up onto the platform and drive your arms into an overhead press — with weight.

Both groups did five hours per week of excellent, professionally designed exercise. After six weeks Group 1 achieved excellent results, recording marked increases in oxygen consumption and strength while decreasing triglycerides, decreasing body fat and reducing waist circumference.

And when participants returned to their regular workouts, their intensity was higher while their perceived exertion remained the same. Remember, both of these test groups did challenging, effective workout regimes.

Why it works Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption. Is it just me, or do gym classes seem to be getting shorter and more efficient all the time? Sure, there's still the occasional minute yoga class, but fitness clubs these days know that we're in a rush--and thanks to the science of high-intensity interval training HIITthey've got ways to get us real results in less time than ever.

Take the new New Zealand-based Les Mills Grit Series, rolling out at gyms around the country this month: It calls itself "the most intense 30 minutes your body will ever experience," and I have to say they could be right.

Check out their video promo to see what I mean! Grit Series classes focus on cardio, strength training, and plyometrics --those explosive power moves like high-knee jumps and burpees. There are three versions of the class, each one focusing on one aspect a little more than the others I sampled the Cardio class, and the Strength class is highlighted abovebut every session does make sure to incorporate all three pillars.

My instructor, the adorably-accented Les Mills, Jr. The brand's research show that their program works, too: When they had Penn State researchers track two groups of exercisers on professionally-designed workout plans, the group that swapped 60 minutes of cardio for two minute Grit Series sessions lost more than twice as much body fat and saw a four-fold decrease in their triglycerides, one part of total cholesterol.

What can you expect in a Grit Series class? Non-stop action; even the recovery periods include some type of movement. Lots of squats, jumps, pushups and ups-and-downs from horizontal to vertical--my quads were sore on the stairs for days. Some classes use weights, like Les Mills' adjustable SmartBar barbell, while others don't require any special equipment.

You'll push your heart rate to the max, and you'll sweat, a lot. And while you can always skip between the Strength, Cardio and Plyo classes to get some variety, they're all updated every three months to give your body fresh new challenges. Grit Series is or will soon be at select Hour Fitness and Bally Total Fitness locations, and at lots of independent gyms around the country; you can find a class near you here.
